Adrian Edmondson chose Sandy after hearing her on a Led Zeppelin LP, which began a dedication to her music. I took in my autographed copy of Rendezvous, Sandy’s last solo LP, signed when I interviewed her in 1977, maybe one of the last interviews she gave. She was quiet, little fed up with the way her career had gone and was thinking of going to America to live. She died fae too young, and I’m only sorry that all the acclaim which comes her way is posthumous.

Citizen Kane

Greatest Film Ever Made…?

Patrick Humphries

<picture></picture>

That would be Citizen Kane then. I love it because it is one of the few classic films where the technique does not overwhelm the narrative. Kane is such a great story. And is given life by the 24 year old Orson Welles’ performance. When playing ‘old’, most actors have their hair dyed. Welles’ looks and sounds like an old man, and the sluggish way he moves suggests the weight of years.

I treated myself to watching it, again, this time afresh with subtitles, so it really was something new. The dialogue just crackles, whiplash smart, but with scenes of great poignancy, particularly Agnes Moorhead’s scene as she gives her son away, and Edward Everett Sloane’s recollection of a girl he glimpsed once on a ferry half a century before.

Welles just succeeded with everything he tried – those fake newsreels, the March Of Time obituary, the deep focus shots, the cutaways, especially the wedding breakfast, 10 years of marriage distilled into a few minutes, the opera catastrophe… It is all done with such bravado. And that dialogue “If I hadn’t been rich, I might have been a truly great man”… “I run a couple of newspapers, what do you do?”… “Old age, the only disease you don’t look forward to being cured of”.

He teases great performances out of the entire cast, largely unknown to cinema audiences. It got me thinking about actor’s career’s: George Coulouris is memorable as Thatcher, Kane’s guardian. So after 1941, and playing a substantial role in what many still regard as the Greatest Film Ever Made, he returned to the UK for parts in Hancock’s Half Hour, Lord Peter Wimsey and Percy’s Progress. But I digress…

Pauline Kael tried to diminish Welles’ contribution to the script, but latterly research has shown his hands-on involvement, which does not take anything away from co-writer Herman Mankiewicz.

It just flows so perfectly, the framing of the shots, the sets, the composition. The technique is never overplayed, and everything just fits, slotting in so perfectly. It rewards with repeated viewings. And credit to Alan Yentob for his two part Welles’ Arena profile, which you can still catch on IPlayer.

Every decade Sight & Sound magazine conducted its poll, and for five decades, Kane reigned, until it was eclipsed by Vertigo in 2012. Then in 2022, Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai Du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles stole the top spot. I haven’t seen it, neither had any of my film critic colleagues. And it was largely conspicuous in its absence from the Directors’ Poll.

Times change, aesthetic appreciation alters… I just wish I would live long enough to see whether Citizen Kane returns to its rightful place as GFEM. If you haven’t seen it, do. If you have seen it, watch it again, and marvel…

For Welles, of course, the tragedy is that you come off the blocks at 24 and make the GFEM. It can only be downhill from there. Although of course, there were still further triumphs – he was heartbroken at the butchery committed on Magnificent Ambersons, but bounced back with Touch Of Evil, F For Fake and his own personal favourite, Chimes At Midnight.

For too long he frittered his talent away, trying to rustle up funds for film projects, as he told Alan Yentob “it’s 2% making the film, and 98% hustling”. But much as he may want to be remembered for others, it is always Kane which you come back to. It is the Rosetta Stone… it is in the DNA of every major film maker… It needs no introduction, it will never be forgotten. Dear God, how bad can it be when a seven-part (seven hour) TV series about how wonderful The Guardian is in its search for truth and highlighting the paper’s crusading virtues gets only two stars – in The Guardian! Lacking everything the last crusading TV drama ITV did on the Post Office scandal, The Hack is worth watching for all the wrong reasons. He was 24.

He only ever made three above-the-title films, only one of which was released in his lifetime. Yet he remains the archetypal Rebel Without A Cause; the Mr Cool, still managing to outshine Leonardo Di Caprio, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp.

The James Dean Estate generates an estimated yearly turnover of $5 million. James Dean’s image has been licensed to over 200 products, including Levi’s jeans, National Westminster bank and 4711 cologne.

In 2005, a replica of the car Dean was killed driving toured America to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his death.

In song, James Dean has been commemorated by Madonna, the Eagles, Lou Reed, Don McLean, REM, Bruce Springsteen and Mick Jagger. There were 100 or so “tribute” records (‘His Name Was Dean’, ‘We’ll Never Forget You’, ‘The Death Of James Dean‘) released immediately after Dean’s death

Elvis Presley was approached to play James Dean in a biopic; he was Bob Dylan’s first idol; The Smiths used Dean’s image on a single sleeve and Morrissey’s Suedehead video was filmed at Dean’s grave.

Dean’s first onscreen line was the unpromising “Hey pops, I’ll have a choc malt, heavy on the choc, plenty of milk, four spoons of malt, two scoops of vanilla, one mixed and one floating!”. He filmed a road safety commercial, recorded a fortnight before Dean ‘s death - in a car crash!

Just how good was he? There is sadly scant evidence, but I always believed he had the talent, and deserves to be appreciated as more than someone who lived fast, died young and had a good looking corpse. I remember clearly the first time I saw him: it was in 1975, and for the 20th anniversary of his death, BBC TV was showing his three films.

I was working at the Department of the Environment and one of my colleagues, Robin Groom, probably ten years older, asked what I was doing that night? Probably going to the pub. Stay in, he sagely advised, and watch East Of Eden. Advice for which I am eternally grateful.

Dean first appears hunched on a pavement, while a grandly -dressed woman passes him by. He follows her, moving like a cross between a kitten and a cougar. She is the mother he needs to make contact with. His every movement is spooked, twitching, carrying all the turmoil of coiled adolescence. The film then develops into a visceral contest between Dean and his over-bearing father, the great Raymond Massey. As it was 1955 though, a happy ending is required.

Dean is best remembered as the surly, misunderstood Jim Stark in Rebel Without A Cause. Along with The Wild One and Jailhouse Rock, it stands as one of the decade’s best attempts to deal with the trauma of teenagers in the cosy- white-fenced world of Eisenhower’s America.

The film’s reputation was enhanced when it was released only a week after Dean’s death. The fans flocked in their millions.

The only film to ‘stretch’ Dean was Giant. It begins as him playing his own age, but in a sprawling three hour Dallas-style oil baron saga, Dean’s character ages, the only time he played beyond his actual age.

Of course that tragically premature death only enhanced the legend. But for years, James Dean came to symbolize the mixed-up kid, reaching out for help, but rejecting every advance.

I happen to believe had he lived, he could have developed into an actor of substance. Comparisons with Brando aren’t really relevant: for Brando, acting came so easily, that he soon grew bored, and allowed his talent to dwindle. Dean was possessed of a curiosity, a desire to learn and a wish to stretch himself as an actor.

We’ll never know how it would have panned out. Somewhere on a lonely desert highway in the late afternoon of 20 September 1955, as he sped along in his newly-purchased Porsche, Dean’s last words to his passenger as he watched a car ahead make an ill-advised turn “He’s got to see us…”

The passenger and other driver survived. Dean’s death prompted Hollywood’s greatest mourning since Rudolph Valentino. Endless biographies, tributes and documentaries still try to find the ‘real’ James Dean, but in a sense, he outlives us all.

<a He was so jolly and full of bonhomie, I later learned he suffered from terrible depression.

Dipping into his autobiography is well worth your effort: he remembers his grandmother telling Noel Coward about home delivery birthing “Disgusting, just like those African women who used to give birth behind trees… I never thought it would come to Berkshire”.

His dad Robert was a stalwart of British cinema, but in 1940 was summoned to an office in Reading asked how he would like to contribute to the war effort “I would quite like to sit in a small office in Reading asking other people what they would most like to do in uniform” replied Robert

Sheridan also had endless memories of John Gielgud ‘s dropped bricks, like the time he was walking along Piccadilly and bumping into Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher “Where are you living now?” “No.10 Downing Street” “Oh you women, always so clever at buying the right sort of property. I never seem to meet a really good estate agent”

He remembers Coral Browne being approached by a floorwalker at Fortnum & Mason and being asked “And what might madam’s pleasure be this morning?” “Well dearie, my pleasure would be a good fuck but I’ve actually come in for a pound of grapes”.

I miss the money of course, but I miss being asked my opinion on something I actually knew something about. I miss going up to the Arts Programme offices, stacked high with unread books “for review” to which I regularly helped myself. And although I never knew him well, I miss Sheridan’s knowledge and his boundless enthusiasm.

The 20th Century seems a long time ago for this freelance journalist…

Guns of Navarone

Oh you know, some nights you just want comfort viewing.

Patrick Humphries

<picture></picture>

Oh you know, some nights you just want comfort viewing. I don’t do subscription channels, but with You Tube/ I Player/ DVDs, I always have enough to choose from.

So what was it to be? A worthy cinema classic? A new TV thriller? A thought-provoking documentary? No, it was Saturday night, and I thought what I really fancy is Guns Of Navarone, which is what I plumped for.

Must have seen it, what, half a dozen times? On initial release, television showings, DVD… Have to say it still packs a punch, suspenseful even though we know that – spoiler ending – those big guns do get destroyed.

Just looking at the boat crashing on the rocks, and watching the cast immersed in thousands of gallons of water. And the seagull shooting out of the cliff.

I remember loving it in the cinema, growing up on a diet of war picture comics and films (Reach For The Sky, Dam Busters, Cruel Sea) but they were all black & what: Guns Of Navarone offered WWII in colour! And they moved, all those Stukas, E-Boats and tanks.

Of course now you look at it with an adult eye: thecasting of James Darren was intended to bring in a teenage audience, a la Ricky nelson in Rio Bravo. And weren’t some of these desperadoes a little bit… old? I still love Gregory Peck (born 1916) addressing David Niven (born 1910) as “son”.

Years later I met Peck’s daughter Cecilia at an event. I inquired on her current career and she told me of the pioneering documentaries she had made of how women were exploited. I somehow sensed she wasn’t in the mood for a chat about The Guns Of Navarone.

I reckon I’ll leave it for a few year before returning to the island of Navarone.I always smile when I remember my friend David Brook visiting an industrial estate the morning after the film had been on TV, and the jobsworth remarking about the fictional film “Course you know, it wasn’t true, ‘cos I was there”.

Have to say The Guns Of Navarone whetted my appretite for those big screen, all colour epics I devoured as a kid, fortunately I now have The Alamo, The Great Escape and Zulu on DVD.

Bonzo Memories

One of only two bands I wish I’d seen live were The Beatles.

Patrick Humphries

<picture></picture>

One of only two bands I wish I’d seen live were The Beatles. Reflecting on the Bonzos, He said his most memorable gig was supporting Sly & the Family Stone on the band’s only US tour. God alone know what Sly’s audience made of the Bonzos, particularly as their equipment had been held up at customs and the British band had to perform their entire set through megaphones!

On their only American tour, the Bonzo Dog Band were trawling across a desert when they were pulled over by a Highway Patrolman. Viewing the colourfully-clad Brits in a van crammed with their stage items - inflatable figures, duck’s hats, rabbit heads etc, the cop muttered “Jeez, how are you guys going to get by in the States?” only to have Viv Stanshall respond from the back “Good manners, dear boy, good manners…”

Bob Dylan And An He shows exemplary taste, from its moody James Dean style cover photo, through a remarkable 10 songs. Of course the title track, With God On Our Side, Only A Pawn In Their Game, The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carrol make it his most overt ‘protest’ LP, there is a richer dust concealed. When The Ship Comes In is a remarkably stirring song which he sang at the March On Washington. While One Too Many Mornings, North Country Blues and Restless Farewell are infused with the wisdom of the ages, all the more remarkable for the composer being not yet 23. And has there ever been a more poignant love song than Boots Of Spanish Leather? The album sometimes gets overlooked in any appraisal of Dylan’s extraordinary career because the title track overshadowed everything around it. Such an anthem, I found the moment when ‘Bob’ sings it at Newport in 1964 in A Complete Unknown, and the crowd join in, very moving. Even though it didn’t actually happen. And of course The Times They Are A-Changin’ has been a Godsend to sub-editors everywhere since 1964. Good call Bob, extra Go Cat tonight…

Thanks for reading! The Piccadilly-based guardians do have a link to the Fab Four, beyond the similarity of their job title. These dapper gents enforce the shopping arcade’s long list of rules, which includes a ban on whistling. For years, the only person allowed to break that rule was Sir Paul McCartney, on the basis that he has supplied more whistleable tunes than any person who ever lived. In recent years, two further lucky souls have been added to the roster of those permitted to whistle in Burlington Arcade. In 2011, a 10-yr-old boy (anonymous) unlocked the achievement after performing well in his exams. Then, last year, world whistling champion Geert Chatrou joined this exclusive club.

<picture></picture>

Friday Night Pizza

I am told these are the sort of pictures people post.

Patrick Humphries

I am told these are the sort of pictures people post. Pirate Radio London. Two black & white TV channels, but plenty of cinema opportunities - East Dulwich Odeon, Camberwell Odeon, Classic Brixton (now the Ritzy), ABC Forest Hill, ABC Brixton (now the Fridge). The real Big Screen Treats all came in dazzling Technicolor with stereo sound. Kia-Ora in hand and the curtains parted - The Guns Of Navarone, The Great Escape, The Battle Of The Bulge, Von Ryan’s Express, 633 Squadron, The Heroes Of Telemark, Operation Crossbow. I do wonder though, was it the lure of Nazis that that drew me to… The Sound Of Music? There was always a grainy advert for the ‘Rajah Indian Restaurant, only 200 yards from this cinema. Closed on Sundays’. According to my Mum’s diary that summer my last film was Help! at the London Pavilion. The leisurely summer term was over, no more idling on the boundary as a cricket match slowly unfolded. The rugger posts were being erected. A muddy autumn term beckoned. American magazine publisher J.M. Stoddart is cherry-picking English authors for his Philadelphia literary title, Lippincott's magazine. That night he picks up the bill and must have been happy with the results: Oscar Wilde delivered The Picture Of Dorian Grey (“there is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about”). While Arthur Conan Doyle let him have the second Sherlock Holmes, Sign Of The Four (“How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”). But on publication Doyle was wearying of his creation. In November 1891, he wrote to his mother: "I think of slaying Holmes, ... and winding him up for good and all. He takes my mind from better things." His mother sensibly responded: "You won't! You can't! You mustn't!" Conan Doyle had good South London roots: a GP practice in South Norwood, Toby the bloodhound lodged on Brixton Road, The Adventure Of The Norwood Builder… He always thought he would be remembered for his historical novels featuring Brigadier Gerard or Professor Challenger. But it was the occupant of 221B Baker Street who outlived him, and lives with us still.

Battle of Britain

I suppose because my Dad was in the RAF and flew Hurricanes I’ve always been interested in the Battle Of Britain.

Patrick Humphries

I suppose because my Dad was in the RAF and flew Hurricanes I’ve always been interested in the Battle Of Britain. He missed the battle, trained in America, then went to India to teach their pilots how to fly, where he met my Mum who was nursing there. So he’d take me to Biggin Hill for flypasts. After he died I was lucky enough to visit the airfield where the Battle Of Britain Flight is stationed. They were firing up for their summer season, and I stood my the tiny, flimsy Hurricane like my Dad flew.

Only later did I appreciate the role a minor MP played in the RAF victory of 1940. The prevailing view of the 1930s was the “the bomber will always get through”, which is where our resources should go. Hugh Dowding, Head of Fighter Command, disagreed, and argued that resources should go into fighter production.

In 1936, Thomas Inskip was appointed Minister For The Co-Ordination Of Defence. Prior to that, he was best known for his Parliamentary objections to a new edition of The Book Of Common Prayer. In his new job, Inskip reasoned that defence should be a priority, and as fighters were cheaper to produce than bombers, that’s where the money should go. Which, mercifully, in that tumultuous summer of 1940 there were – just - enough Spitfires and Hurricanes to thwart the Luftwaffe.

Inevitably I’d watch the 1969 film of The Battle Of Britain. An all-star cast, more Spitfires and Hurricanes than you can shake a stick at. I always admired Laurence Olivier’s performance as Dowding, the man who could have lost the war in a week. Dowding is confronted by a Minister about the claims his pilots are making. “Frankly unbelievable, bad for propaganda”. Olivier responds: “I’m not very interested in… propaganda” (he issues the word like a Bishop handling a prophylactic) “If I’m right, they’ll give up. If I’m wrong, they’ll be in London in a week”.

Rocks Firsts

Back in the last Century I pitched a Book Of Rock Firsts which never got published.

Patrick Humphries

Back in the last Century I pitched a Book Of Rock Firsts which never got published. I’m of an age to remember when LPs were called ‘albums’, not ‘vinyl’… Conductors on buses… Parking meters… Party lines… Doctors in white coats… My interest in modern ‘pop’ music stopped around the release of the Stone Roses debut album. Really, in fact, the only Stone Roses album. Did anyone (apart from Ian Brown and Pete Bell) really rate The Second Coming? I’ll pay lip service to ‘modern’ cinema, but I’ll always take Lawrence Of Arabia over the Fantastic Four reboot, or Goodbye Mr Chips to The Holdovers. The thought I’d never see Citizen Kane, The Sting or This Happy Breed again fills me with indescribable woe.

For music, it is dipping back to old LPs, or more likely selecting three or four CDs to listen to while I write. Today? A bit of Caravan, Gram Parsons, Warren Zevon and the soundtrack to South Pacific. I’ll also be dipping back into my archive to find interviews with, oh, Bert Jansch, Bruce Springsteen, Waylon Jennings, Paul McCartney to share

So, yes, music and movies, but also little historical detours, like the role Thomas Inskip played in winning the Battle Of Britain… Or how Churchill almost met Hitler… Or George V at a viewing of French Impressionists and summoning his wife “Here’s something to make you laugh Mary”… Or a selection of those buried in Putney Vale Cemetery… Or Elvis Costello’s blistering response to my review of The Juliet Letters… Or informing my mate Steve Blacknell that, yes, while he may have been one of the few people to accompany Phil Collins on Concorde from Wembley to Philadelphia on 13 July 1985, Bruce Springsteen wasn’t “crap at Live Aid” because Bruce Springsteen wasn’t at Live Aid…

Something for everyone then. Maybe not to everyone’s tastes, but I guarantee it won’t be dull, And in Spike Milligan’s words “It’s all free folks…”

Thanks for reading!
